ERCOT protocol revisions: what compliance teams need to track right now

ERCOT's Nodal Protocols run over 4,000 pages. They update monthly. For compliance teams covering ERCOT alongside other ISOs, keeping track of which revisions actually affect operations is a full-time job that most teams do not have the headcount to staff.

In Q1 and Q2 2026 alone, ERCOT published 21 Nodal Protocol Revision Requests (NPRRs), 6 System Change Requests, and 3 Other Binding Document revisions. Not all of them matter to every market participant. But the ones that do matter carry real deadlines and real consequences.

What changed

The revisions span settlement calculations, congestion revenue rights, real-time co-optimization, and resource adequacy reporting. Several NPRRs modify how generation resources report availability during scarcity conditions. Others change how ancillary service obligations are calculated for load-serving entities.

For compliance teams, the critical question is not what changed in the abstract. It is which changes affect your specific operations, which have compliance deadlines attached, and what you need to update in your internal procedures before those deadlines hit.

The problem with tracking revisions manually

Most teams track ERCOT revisions through a combination of email subscriptions, manual reviews of the Technical Advisory Committee minutes, and spreadsheets maintained by individual analysts. When the same team also covers PJM, MISO, or NERC CIP, the spreadsheet breaks. Changes get missed. Deadlines pass.

The cost is not hypothetical. A missed protocol change that affects settlement calculations can result in incorrect invoicing, market penalties, or PUCT enforcement action. A missed resource adequacy reporting change can affect capacity obligations.

A better approach

The regulatory text already exists. The revision history is public. The question is whether your team should be reading 4,000 pages every month to find the 3 changes that matter, or whether that process should take minutes instead of weeks.

PhronEdge Energy covers all 21 NPRRs from this quarter, cited to the section. Ask which ones affect your operations and get the answer with the source attached.
